Congratulations Lake Macquarie City Council

2nd August 2016

FMA Member Lake Macquarie has been acknowledged as developing the ‘Best National Case Study in Coastal Adaptation’ at the 2016 Climate Change Adaptation Conference in Adelaide.
The Marks Point and Belmont South Local Adaptation Plan was developed over two years by Council with assistance from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and substantial community input. The plan identifies a long-term strategy and 10 year Action Plan to prepare for and respond to increased levels of flooding and lake level rise.
Lake Macquarie Council’s innovative land use planning was previously acknowledged at the 2014 FMA-NRMA Insurance Flood Risk Management Project of the Year Awards when Council received a Highly Commended Award for its 'Development Guidelines for Resilient Housing in Lake Macquarie' project. The guidelines give builders and developers design options for homes that can be adapted to higher flood levels and increased flood frequencies resulting from the effects of rising sea levels.
